Twilight sedation involves carrying out dental procedures while the patient is induced into a calm, sleep-like state through the use of IV sedation. It relaxes the body’s nervous system and suppresses the patient’s pain receptors for a given amount of time.
Sedation dentistry is a great option for any patients who are feeling anxious about their treatment as it allows for minimal discomfort throughout the whole process. Afterwards, most patients will have very little or no memory of their procedure.
With general anaesthesia, patients will be unconscious and sleep through their entire dental procedure without any awareness of their surroundings. Under IV sedation, patients experience a drowsy, dream-like state of deep relaxation without being asleep. Both options allow the patient to not feel any pain or discomfort during their procedure.
There are many reasons why people may need the help of sedation for their dental procedures, such as:
Twilight sedation will last as long as needed for your entire procedure. A medical doctor will administer the IV sedation and ensure you receive the correct amount for your treatment.
After your treatment, you’ll spend around an hour or two in our comfortable recovery rooms as the anaesthetic wears off. Then, you’ll be ready to return to your own home. You will need to have a family member, partner or friend escort you home as you won’t be able to drive.
There are some side effects associated with the use of anaesthetic in sedation dentistry but they are generally only minor and temporary. These can include:
Before undergoing sedation, Daniel will assess the suitability of your specific case and discuss all associated risks and side effects involved.
