How long does teeth whitening last?

How long does teeth whitening last?

Professional teeth whitening done by your dentist is the best way to ensure you get a long-lasting white smile. This is because we can access the most powerful, dentist-only bleaching agents that are required to achieve the best teeth whitening results.

But keep in mind that your lifestyle and food choices after your treatment will affect how long your results last. To preserve your pearly white smile, you could start using a straw to drink dark-coloured beverages, such as coffee, tea or red wine, or try to limit eating foods with strong pigments like turmeric or beetroot. You should also avoid smoking as this will quickly discolour your teeth. Be sure to keep up with your dental hygiene routine, including twice-daily brushing and flossing, and visit your dentist regularly for professional teeth cleaning to help prevent staining.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Is teeth whitening safe?

Yes, professional teeth whitening done under the guidance of your dentist is perfectly safe. We use Philips Zoom teeth whitening, one of the most trusted teeth whitening systems in the dental industry, for both in-chair and at-home whitening treatment. Philips Zoom teeth whitening combines powerful blue LED light with fast-acting whitening gel to achieve the brightest result. It also uses Amorphous Calcium Phosphate (ACP) to protect your enamel and enhance lustre.

Before starting your teeth whitening treatment, we will examine your teeth and gums to assess whether there are any underlying issues, such as cracks, decay or gum disease, that may impact your results. We will also consider your tooth and gum health when tailoring your treatment to ensure minimal tooth sensitivity or discomfort.

Is it better to get teeth whitened at the dentist?

Is it better to get teeth whitened at the dentist?

Like any other dental treatment, teeth whitening is safest when done under the professional guidance of your dentist.

Despite what the packaging may say, DIY teeth whitening kits bought from the supermarket or pharmacy do not use the most effective tooth whitening gels. In fact, some bleaching agents in store-bought whitening kits may be harmful for your teeth, eroding your enamel and damaging your delicate gum tissue. And even if you do achieve a whiter smile with a DIY whitening kit, your results certainly won’t last as long as a professional teeth whitening treatment.

Only your dentist has access to the most powerful tooth bleaching agents — and only they know how to use them safely to ensure your teeth and gums are not damaged in the process. A dentist will also be able to use other whitening techniques like enamel microabrasion to remove stubborn stains from the tooth surface. Your dentist can also customise your teeth whitening treatment to suit your exact needs and achieve precise, long-lasting results.

Can yellow teeth be whitened?

Can yellow teeth be whitened?

Our dentist-grade teeth whitening treatment can effectively lift most stains and discolouration from yellow teeth. If you have yellow or brown spots on your teeth from fluorosis or other surface enamel defects, we may also recommend microabrasion to help remove these stains.

However, it’s important to note that some tooth discolouration will not respond well to whitening treatment. Unfortunately, tetracycline staining from certain medications cannot be removed with teeth whitening treatment. Likewise, a darkened or ‘dead’ tooth will not be able to be lightened with this type of treatment. Dental crowns, veneers and fillings also can’t be lightened and may even appear more yellowed or discoloured if the surrounding teeth are whitened.

This is why it’s so important for your dentist to assess your teeth and confirm whether teeth whitening is the right option for you.

Does teeth whitening hurt?

Does teeth whitening hurt?

Teeth whitening should not be painful. When done by an experienced teeth whitening dentist, you should not experience any discomfort. You might feel a tingling sensation when the bleaching agent is applied to your teeth but rest assured this is perfectly normal. If you have sensitive teeth or gums, we will also take this into account when tailoring your teeth whitening system to ensure a more comfortable treatment.
